he Ann Arbor Reconstructionist Havurah Religious School, known in Hebrew as the Beit Sefer, warmly welcomes children of both member and non-member families in Grades K through 7. Classes are held at the Jewish Community Center on Sundays from September through May.
We encourage parents to become involved in the Beit Sefer and their children’s Jewish education.
The learning experience includes both a structured classroom and less-formal “learning occasions” that are integrated into Havurah activities, with an emphasis on developing Jewish cultural literacy and positive Jewish values. We continuously seek parental input into our evolving dynamic curriculum and encourage parents to become involved in the Beit Sefer and their children’s Jewish education.
The staff looks particularly strong for the 2009-2010/5770 school year. Aura Ahuvia, the Havurah's new rabbinic student intern and one of its founding members, will direct the Beit Sefer. She brings years of experience in religious school teaching, family education, summer camp, youth groups, song-leading and community organizing to her role.
Shoshana Jackson enters her second year as the Beit Sefer head teacher. She has spent many years in the religious school classroom and enjoys a strong reputation with Beit Sefer students and parents alike. New hire Brian Duchemin also brings years of teaching experience with him, both from public and religious school. Finally, our thanks extend to Benjamin Ben-Baruch, who has so capably guided the Beit Sefer the past two years, lending it his stability, credibility and depth of knowledge.
The curriculum follows guidelines of the Jewish Reconstructionist Federation which focus on Hebrew cultural literacy, prayer and spirituality, Jewish living skills, celebrations, values, and peoplehood (including our relationships to Israel as a contemporary center of Jewish culture and civilization).
The Hebrew program divides children according to their level of literacy, instead of by age, so that they can advance from what they already know. Our ideal is for all students to study at their learning edge.
The school provides 11-12 year olds with a curriculum geared toward Bar/Bat Mitzvah preparation.
The school offers tuition discounts to Havurah members and families enrolling more than one child. The 2009-2010/5770 school year runs from September 13 through May.
