n past years, some Havurah members felt ambivalent about contributing to the traditional Jewish Federation charitable fundraising. Why? Because of concern that the portion of their donations allocated overseas would not be funneled through organizations with whose political and social agendas they agreed.

That's why, in 2006, the Havurah created the Progressive Jewish Giving Fund. Thanks to a major effort by board member Audrey Newell, members and others who share these views now have an alternate vehicle to support the same local community organizations as the Federation, while we simultaneously channel overseas contributions to organizations whose missions we share.
Administration of the Progressive Jewish Giving Fund is handled by the Jewish Community Foundation and allocation of funds is done by the Havurah board. As a matter of practice, local donations are allocated in the same proportions as the Federation's local donations, while the international portion is split among three international Jewish organizations committed to working toward peace and social justice.
